Practical notes on choosing a photo, checking the edges, and taking your result into the next project.
File formats
PNG or JPG: which should you download?
Choose PNG when you want to place a cutout on another design. Select Transparent in the editor before downloading. The checkerboard shows the empty parts of the image; it is not included in your file.
Choose JPG when the image needs a finished background, such as a product listing or profile picture. JPG cannot store transparency. Select a color or upload a backdrop first; a transparent result becomes white when exported as JPG.
Keep a transparent PNG as your reusable copy. You can place it on different backgrounds later without removing the original background again.
Start with a sharp, well-lit photo and keep the whole subject inside the frame. Background removal cannot restore a cropped hand, a missing product corner, or detail already lost to blur.
Look for visible separation between the subject and its surroundings. Hair against a similarly colored wall, transparent glass, and motion blur can make the boundary difficult to identify. If an edge is missing, try a clearer photo or a simpler background.
After processing, use Compare to inspect the original alongside the result. Zoom in around hair, handles, and thin edges. Preview the cutout on both a light and a dark color to spot unwanted halos before downloading.
Start with product photos taken from a similar angle and distance. Removing the background helps reduce clutter, but it does not change the lighting or perspective of the product itself.
After removing the background, choose Color and use the same color for each image. White is a practical starting point, while a subtle brand color can work for a catalog or social post. Check the image requirements of the destination before choosing a background.
For a lifestyle composition, upload a background image instead. The editor fills the output canvas with that image, so check the crop in the preview. Download a PNG or JPG with the selected backdrop, and keep a separate transparent PNG if you want to reuse the product later.
